Mekong Delta provinces experience export growth

Specifically, the city of Can Tho earned export revenue of US$429.6 million, up 0.3 percent from the same period last year, while An Giang Province’s export value reached US$217.31 million (up 2.6 percent), and foreign trade by Hau Giang Province reached almost US$198.7 million (up 4.49 percent).

Doan Minh Triet, Deputy Director of the An Giang Province Department of Industry and Trade, said the slight increase was a notable achievement in the context of the pandemic. His department’s data show that the region’s provinces exported 127,540 tonnes of rice worth US$64.52 million in the first quarter, up 2.03 percent in volume and 1.29 percent in value from the same period last year; frozen seafood exports reached 29,500 tonnes totaling US$71.12 million in value, up 1.72 percent in volume and up 2.18 percent in value; frozen vegetable and fruit exports reached 2,130 tonnes worth US$3.6 million (up 1.19 percent in volume and 2.86 percent in value); and textile and garment exports hit US$31.01 million (up 3.37 percent).

The region’s industry and trade sector has proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE) and Vietnamese trade offices abroad help businesses in the region promote trade in foreign markets. The sector will study exporters’ demands and difficulties to help them expand their markets, diversify product ranges and restructure supply chains in order to find new markets as substitutes for China that is being severely affected by the pandemic.

Triet said the Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore agreed to organize a delegation of Singaporean seafood and rice enterprises to An Giang Province for meetings with provincial exporters. The Vietnam Trade Office in Japan also agreed to help An Giang introduce sample products and catalogues at the office’s export showroom in Japan.
